What is Aliyah and Who is Eligible?

Aliyah is much more than just moving – it’s returning home, to the Jewish homeland. The Law of Return is the basis for this right, and it allows every Jew, their children, grandchildren, and spouses to immigrate to Israel and receive citizenship.

So who is actually eligible for Aliyah? The law defines several criteria:

  • Jew: Anyone born to a Jewish mother or who has converted according to Halakha (Jewish law).
  • Child of a Jew: Even if they are not Jewish themselves.
  • Grandchild of a Jew: Even if they are not Jewish themselves.
  • Spouse of a Jew, child of a Jew, or grandchild of a Jew.

There are special cases where a special procedure called “Nativ” is required, especially when dealing with descendants of Jews who want to immigrate to Israel from the former Soviet Union. It is important to know that it is possible to immigrate to Israel even without the presence of living Jewish relatives.

It is important to note that there are also cases in which the right to Aliyah may be denied. For example, if a person has converted from their religion of their own free will, if they have a serious criminal record, or if they suffer from certain diseases.

We understand that the Aliyah process can be complex and confusing, so we are here to help you every step of the way. At Belong.co.il you can find all the information and resources you need to make your dream a reality.

How to Move to Israel from the USA and Other Countries?

So you’ve decided you want to take the plunge and move to Israel? Excellent. There are several ways to do this, and we are here to help you understand your options.

In general, there are two main ways to move to Israel:

  1. Through an Aliyah Organization: You can begin your Aliyah process through a recognized Aliyah organization such as The Jewish Agency or Nefesh B’Nefesh, depending on your country of residence. These organizations guide you through the required paperwork and help you submit your application to the relevant authorities, including coordination with the Israeli Embassy or Consulate. One of the advantages of this route is that much of the process can be handled in advance, before arriving in Israel. However, it’s important to note that the process can still be lengthy and occasionally involve bureaucratic challenges.
  2. As Tourists: You can come to Israel as tourists, and only then apply for a change of status to a new immigrant. The advantage of this method is that you are already in Israel and can get an impression of the country before making a final decision. In addition, in some cases, changing status from within Israel may be faster than through the embassy. However, it is important to know that this process may be more legally complex, so it is recommended to seek the help of a lawyer specializing in immigration law.

No matter which way you choose, you will need to prepare a number of important documents in advance, such as birth certificates, marriage certificates (if relevant), and documents proving your connection to the Jewish people.

What are the Benefits of Moving to Israel?

Israel has a lot to offer. Beyond being a “start-up nation,” with many economic and professional opportunities, there is governmental and organizational support for new immigrants (from the Ministry of Aliyah and Integration and the Jewish Agency). You will receive financial assistance such as “absorption basket” (Sal Klita), tax benefits and housing assistance, as well as social support such as free Hebrew lessons (Ulpan) and community support.
